Arlita Gens

Arlita Smith Gens, 92, of Kailua-Kona, died June 4, 2017, in Boulder, Colorado. She retired as director of Laguna Beach Presbyterian Preschool in California.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. on Sept. 28 at Keauhou Bay for a celebration of life and paddle-out scattering of ashes by Keauhou Canoe Club. Loose flowers welcome.

She is survived by husband, Ralph Gens of Kailua-Kona; sons, Dan (Linda A.) Smith of Goleta, Calif.; Randy (Linda K.) Smith of Boulder, Colo.; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kimiko Sakoda

Kimiko Sakoda, 93, of Hilo, died Aug. 24, 2017, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Kapehu, she was retired from the former Miko Meats.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by sons, Ronnie Sakoda, Floyd (Sharon) Sakoda of Hilo; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Roland Shimaoka

Roland “Pops” Lolani Shimaoka, Sr. 84, of Hilo died Sept. 9, 2017, at the Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired warehouse foreman for the frozen food division at Suisan and a member of Ka Uhane Hemolele O Ka Malamalama.

Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Sept. 29, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for an 11 a.m. funeral service. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire.

He is survived by daughters, Joey (Paul) Lee of Hilo, Stephanie (Moe) Bello of Keaau; son, Roland (Pingo) Shimaoka, Jr. of Honomu; brother, Walter Shimaoka of Hilo; sisters, Margie (Melvin) Malczon of Honolulu, Martha Kuulei Sarme of Kona; one sister-in-law; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald Baptista

Ronald Baptista, 89, of Mountain View, died July 21, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Kalapana, he was a marine engineering surveyor, owner of Ron Baptista Marine Surveys, LLC, a retired U.S. Navy veteran, and member of American Legion Post 3, Hilo.

A private service was held.

He is survived by wife, Marilyn Baptista of Mountain View; daughter, Darlene (Ken) Lowe of Bothell, Washington; sons, Joseph (Cheryl) Baptista of Lake Stevens, Washington and Thomas Baptista of Auburn, Washington; sisters, Carmen Atley of Ohio, Phylistine Washington of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Geraldine Jones of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; numerous nieces and nephews.
